Update: I’ve decided that this isn’t the best pen ever. I’m allowed to change my mind. Stay tuned for more.
I spend a lot of time writing notes, making sketches, and scribing (or scribbling) my thoughts. Over the years, I’ve undertaken the challenge of finding the perfect writing device. Finally after years of searching, I’ve figured out what makes my perfect pen.

And the winner is…
Pilot Razor Point .3mm is the best writing device I’ve ever used. Of course, there could be a better one out there. But I haven’t found it yet. Looking for suggestions within my requirements as follows:
Requirements fulfilled
- Small tip diameter, .3mm is perfect. I’ve tried as low as .05mm (the tip isn’t durable enough) and big as 1mm (too big).
- Fast drying ink, it shouldn’t slop onto the page. (e.g. gel pens can be easily smeared.)
- A durable tip, though it shouldn’t cut or dent the paper if pressed too hard. (e.g. ballpoints leave gutters and impress upon the page below)
- Smooth consistent line, suitable for writing at a frantic pace. (e.g. ballpoints run low and stutter occasionally)

Escher knows
As Maurits Cornelis Escher once said,
We are only limited by our tools.
That’s especially true with hand tools. He also said that the hand is the ultimate tool. I couldn’t agree more.
